The Castle

Built as the family home of the hotel's founders, on the ridge above the course, with the most commanding view in the Bvumba.

↓

The Seymour-Smiths built their own house on the ridge above the hotel, and built it as a castle.

Work is said to have been done by Italian internees held in the district during the war, in granite quarried on the mountain, in the manner of a Scottish tower house. The family lived here while the hotel below took its first guests in 1946.

It was sold in the nineteen-eighties and run for a time as a guest house before Leopard Rock brought it back into the estate. In April 2014 it reopened as a venue. It is largely unfurnished, which is part of its pull: the rooms and stairs are as they were built, and the windows frame the whole Burma Valley.

The Castle Sundowner

The estate's signature evening. A short drive or walk up from the hotel, refreshments on the terrace, and the sun going down over the valley from the highest vantage on the property. Book through the front desk on the day.

Dinners and weddings

The Castle takes private dinners and ceremonies, and is included in every whole-hotel wedding at no venue charge. Marquees go on the lawn; the tower is the photograph.
